DCDSB Celebrates Second Annual Black Student Excellence Awards
On November 6, 2025, the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) hosted the Second Annual Black Student Excellence Awards, continuing its commitment to celebrating the achievements of Black students across the board. This event is a collaboration between the DCDSB and the board’s Anti-Black Racism and Black Excellence Advisory Committee, recognizing Grade 11 and Grade 12 students who self-identify as Black and/or of African descent, and have demonstrated leadership and a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The Anti-Black Racism and Black Excellence Advisory Committee was excited to review the nominations submitted by DCDSB secondary schools. “We are honoured to once again celebrate the brilliance, leadership, and resilience of Black students at DCDSB,” said Nicole Emanuel, Chair of the Anti-Black Racism and Black Excellence Advisory Committee. "Their contributions inspire and uplift our community. Recognizing their work reminds us that when one rises, we all rise, and helps build spaces where every student feels seen and valued."
At the ceremony, all nominees were recognized and presented with a certificate, a letter of recognition, and a $100 bursary. The 2025 nominees included:

Oreofeoluwa was honoured with a certificate, a letter of recognition, a glass trophy, and a $500 bursary.
Oreofeoluwa serves as President of the School Leadership Council and Secretary of the Black Students Association, championing equity, inclusivity, and cultural pride. She has led impactful initiatives, including Black History Month programming, a Black Career Panel and Fair, and events featuring NBA All-Star Jamaal Magloire and anti-bullying advocate Neskens Jr. Dorcelus. She also planned a Multicultural Day at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School for two consecutive years, creating space for diverse voices and traditions.
Academically, Oreofeoluwa maintains top marks while tutoring younger students and volunteering in the community. Her commitment to social justice extends to human rights conferences and helping launch “Leading Through Legacy: A Tribute to Black Excellence,” DCDSB’s first Black Graduation event. Oreofeoluwa is celebrated as a visionary leader and role model whose contributions have fostered a more inclusive and empowered school community.
"It is such an honour to receive the Black Student Excellence Award this year," said Oreofeoluwa A., recipient of the 2025-2026 award. "Many of my ventures wouldn't have been made possible without the support of my family, friends, educators and team members. This award celebrates not just one person, but our entire community's journey toward excellence and the legacy of brilliance we continue to build."
“The Black Student Excellence Awards are a celebration of student leadership, achievement and excellence demonstrated by Black students across the DCDSB,” said Gerard Winn, Director of Education. “Each student recognized embodies the values of equity, inclusion, and community-building. Their efforts are helping to shape a Catholic learning community where every student feels seen, heard, and empowered.”
The Black Student Excellence Awards were made possible through the generosity and support of two anonymous donors and the Durham Catholic Children’s Foundation.
